Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and the more secluded anchorages between islands can lose signal entirely depending on your position and which side of an island you are on. Genuinely common on a sailing itinerary, and worth planning around rather than relying on.
💡 Why signal comes and goes on the water
The BVI is an archipelago of dozens of islands and cays, and cell towers sit on the main populated islands — Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and a few others. Sail around to the leeward side of an island, or anchor somewhere remote like Anegada or the outer cays, and you can lose signal even though you were connected an hour earlier a few miles away.

Your USVI eSIM will not work here
Despite sitting right next to the US Virgin Islands and being a common combined trip by ferry, the BVI is a separate UK territory running Digicel and Flow — not AT&T or T-Mobile. A US Virgin Islands SIM or domestic US plan simply will not connect here.
911 works, with a marine backup
911 covers police, fire, and medical emergencies islands-wide (999 also connects). For search and rescue at sea, VISAR is reachable on 999 or VHF Channel 16 — a genuinely useful backup if you are out of signal range on the water.
On the water, VHF backs up your phone
Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) can be reached by dialling 999, or by marine VHF Channel 16 if you have no signal. Worth knowing if you are sailing or anchored somewhere your eSIM cannot reach.
